چکیده

The modification of turbulence in the edge plasma of the DIII–D tokamak at the transition from the low to the high mode of confinement is investigated with a phase-contrast imaging diagnostic. The amplitude and radial correlation length of the turbulence in the confinement region decrease at the transition, whereas the decorrelation time increases. The transition w Ž . x model of Biglari, Diamond, and Terry Phys. Fluids B 2 1990 1 , based on turbulence decorrelation by E=B velocity shear, is quantitatively substantiated by measurements of the theoretical control parameter. Further quantitative predictions of the theory are tested for the first time. q 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. PACS: 52.25.Fi; 52.25.Gj; 52.55.Fa; 52.35.Ra

PSFC / JA - 05 - 46 Advances in measurement and modeling of the high - confinement - mode pedestal on the Alcator C - Mod tokamak

Edge transport barrier (ETB) studies on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511, (1994)] investigate pedestal scalings and radial transport of plasma and neutrals. Pedestal profiles show trends with plasma operational parameters such as total current IP . A ballooning-like I2 P dependence is seen in the pressure gradient, despite calculated stability to ideal ballooning modes. A simila...

Potentials , E ́ B drifts , and ̄ uctuations in the DIII - D boundary

Reciprocating Langmuir probes are used to investigate the structure of electrostatic potentials, E ́ B drifts, and ̄uctuations in the edge (q < 1), scrape-o€ layer (SOL) and divertor of single null diverted discharges in the DIII-D tokamak. These measurements demonstrate that the X-point geometry suppresses potential ̄uctuations in the drift wave range of frequencies (20 kHz6 f6 300 kHz) as pred...

Dependence of the L- to H-mode Power Threshold on Toroidal Rotation and the Link to Edge Turbulence Dynamics

The injected power required to induce a transition from L-mode to H-mode plasmas is found to depend strongly on the injected neutral beam torque and consequent plasma toroidal rotation. Edge turbulence and flows, measured near the outboard midplane of the plasma (0.85 < r/a < 1.0) on DIII-D with the highsensitivity 2D beam emission spectroscopy (BES) system, likewise vary with rotation and sugg...

Comparison of Edge Fluctuation Measurements from PCI, BES, Langmuir Probes and Reflectometry on DIII–D

Phase contrast imaging (PCI), beam emission spectroscopy (BES), reflectometry, and Langmuir probes provide different but complementary measurements of the density fluctuations in the edge of the DIII–D tokamak plasma. In particular, the PCI is sensitive to modes with kθ kr, while the BES and probe response depends less on the angle of ~k⊥. On plasma discharges in which these diagnostics collect...
